Samsung 215TW - 29 Sep 2007

I had used a Mitsubishi DiamondPro 920 for a number of years and it served me well however I started to get problems and decided I needed a decent screen. I trawled the many reviews and, as I use my machine for digital imaging and photograophy, I wanted a quality, reliable, high resolution screen. That is what I have found with the Samsung 215TW.

I read the many reviews that stated CRT screens are better but to be honest, I've found that this monitor is more than a match for my previous screen. In fact I'd say it's far better! The Samsung monitor really is that good.

Colour, contrast and picture quality are superb even before calibration. As I use my machine for digital imaging I wanted it calibrated (I used a Spyder2 to do this) and after calibration, the colours are accurate and natural and I cannot fault the monitor in any way.

Even playing the odd game I cannot fault this monitor. I didn't buy a monitor to play sound through the speakers so I won't event comment on these as I've never used them!

21" is an excellent size too. Although a much larger viewing area than my previous 19" CRT, this monitor is so much smaller!! At last I have some desk space again. The widescreen capabilities of this monitor make it easy to have 2 windows open to compare side by side which is very handy when using explorer or word (or like me comparing and editing images).

Screen real estate is huge in comparison to my old monitor. 1680x1050 is a great resolution. DVD playback also looks excellent. I watch Heroes a lot and the quality of this is easily as good as any monitor/LCD TV I've seen.

It's good that you can connect a few devices to this too. If you want to play the XBox games in true HD then this is an excellent choice too. I don't play it much but my girlfriend's son likes to use it to get the best graphics from it. (I need an HD TV now!!)

The build quality could be better but it's not that bad. The stand could have been better looking too as reported by some but for me this was not an issue at all.

Overall it's an excellent purchase.

Only minor complaint I have is the "Magic Tune" software won't work on my PC (even the latest version). Either the problem is with my graphics card (Radeon X1550 512mb) or Vista Ultimate 32bit. It's not a huge issue, as the monitor can be tweaked directly, though it would be nice to do it through Windows. Display is perfect, no complaints with the quality of construction nor with the stand, all infinately better than my last TFT. How many other monitors can you plug in up to 4 peripherals as well? My Xbox is connected to the AV input - I can switch between PC & Xbox at the push of a button and have picture-in-picture too! Speakers aren't wonderful - they're fine (for me) for the Xbox, PC sound comes through "proper" speakers so it's really not an issue. There may be better monitors on the market, but you won't be disappointed if you buy at the right price.

A great TFT Monitor - 13 Aug 2007

As a long time Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT user, I spent a long time reading reviews and examining specifications online before I finally opted for this Samsung TFT monitor. What can I say, this has far exceeded my expectations as to what to expect from a TFT, the colours and picture quality are superb. I was worried about how older PC games would play on this widescreen monitor, but somehow, even games that do not support its native resolution of 1680*1050 still look great and not distorted at all. Some people have complained about the quality of the speakers, but frankly I have never used them, so cannot comment. A little pricey, but a great monitor nonetheless.

Nice picture but - 13 Feb 2007

This is without doubt the best TFT LCD display I've owned. It approaches the quality of picture some of the best CRTs I've seen. Good working size too, especially, if like me, you have multiple views open in an IDE like Eclipse or are working with the Gimp / Photoshop etc. Two documents open side by side is actually pretty doable and if you just have to watch DVD's via computer that's not bad either.

The bad news - the build quality is poor and the speakers are so bad they should have been left out. The stand is ugly and cheaply made although the usability is good.

Despite the bad points and they're pretty disapointing at this price, I still like this monitor a lot - 4 stars.

After spending nearly a year planning to buy a TFT, reading reviews and technical articles I decided on this monitor. It has all the ports and features including most importantly HDCP via the DVI port. The quality is superb and it is by far the best monitor I have ever used. Colours, contrast and view angles are great. I have not been disappointed with any aspect of this monitor, although I am not using the built in speakers so I can't comment on them. Well worth the money.
