Pay for the name not the picture quality - 16 Mar 2008

I bought this TV based on some good reviews and the name. As this was our first LCD TV, we had no major expectations.

I was surprised, however, at the amount of motion lag (where the picture is blurred) and a poor level of picture quality when up close. Some of this, I understand, is an issue with all LCDs but when I later purchased another LCD (Panasonic 32") I realised that part of this was down to this TV. I would recommend buying a picture with a higher level of contrast (this is just 1300:1, whereas my Panasonic 8500:1)

Otherwise, the viewing angle is good and there have been no major issues with its functioning since we bought in May 07.

Freeview is dreadful but the TV is good - 03 Oct 2007

I think the TV is great. Sadly it came with Freeview and so I now have two teenage kids who watch endless repeats for Scrubs and Friends and anything else they can find to stare at so I am selling it. BBC 3 & 4 for me are the exception but the rest is awful. I have polled my friends and they have the same feedback. I have warned the kids but they don't listen. If you have teenage kids who are quite sporty and reasonably bright don't buy one of these with freeview. Rant over

Not far off perfection... - 13 Apr 2007

Having always had heavy, bulky Sony Trinitron CRT TVs prior to this, my first LCD TV set, I was delighted to see how thin and light this was, with the added bonus of being able to swivel the screen horizontally on its stand. After all, who has chairs directly in front of the set?

Other good points include two tuners (one digital, one analogue, though the latter will be redundant in a few years!), the resultant analogue *and* digital teletext, "auto volume" to keep the ad break volume at the same levels as the programmes, a light sensor to auto-adjust brightness depending on ambient light levels and a very clear/sharp picture.

Bad points include a too-bright factory default (easily changed though), sitting close to the set (<=5 feet) shows up some blurring/artifacts (goes away if you sit 10+ feet away), no live picture-in-picture (digital vs. analogue) except for a cute "picture freeze" facility and, worst of all, the channel change banner is 35% the height of the screen and chops people's heads off because it's stupidly at the top of the screen rather than the bottom (it's my #1 complaint about the set and - unlike everything else - you can't configure it! Amazing no-one else has mentioned this obvious flaw).

Overall, a great set - would be perfect if the channel change banner was configurable not to dominate the screen (it's not even semi-transparent either). It appears that the set can get software updates over the air - and possibly not just for the Freeview tuner - so c'mon Sony fix this one flaw please. Anyway, the set is very highly recommended and I'm extremely pleased with it.

One of the best TVs ever - 10 Apr 2007

I have always bought SONY products, so when I knew that a new range of Sonys award winning televisions were coming, that was the thing to save for. Even though it only features 1 HDMI input I was not going to let this be much of a major concern. With stunning picture quality and a intergrated freeview tunner this had to be the best. Why pay more for a freeview box when it all comes as part of the package. I live in valley area with bad reception, but as soon as I had plugged the TV in, the picture was crisp (and that wasn't even HD!!). I strongly recomend buying this TV if you want the best!!
